The tour begins in Athens with visits to the Acropolis and New Acropolis Museum, the Agora and Agora Museum, the National Archaeological Museum and Cape Sounion to view the celebrated temple of Poseidon and the sunset over the Saronic Gulf.
We then board a coach headed for the seaside town of Itea, stopping at Eleusis, site of the mysteries of Demeter and her daughter Persephone, the Mycenaean stronghold of Glas (where Dr. Michael Lane has conducted extensive field research), and the mountain resort of Arachova. Next day we visit Delphi, site of Apollo’s oracle. From Delphi, we travel to the Venetian-influenced town of Nauplion, stopping en route to tour the 10th-century ce monastery of St. Luke (Hosios Loukas), where pilgrims flocked to be healed in their sleep, and to view the canal across the Isthmus of Corinth. From Nauplion, we visit the bronze-age citadels of Tiryns and Mycenae. We then fly to Heraklion, Crete for tours of the museum, the labyrinthine complexes at Knossos and Phaistos, and the rural complex at Ayia Triada.
